We are motivated by many needs and desires that lead to a feeling of wellness and inner peace. The hierarchy of needs means that only once our basic needs are satisfied, can we then move on to attend to our needs higher up. Self-actualization, through finding purpose, meaning, and realizing our full potential, can only be achieved if our Health (physiological, mental, spiritual, social), Wealth (safety and security), Family (faith, love and belonging) and Vocation (self-esteem) needs are met.
It is easy to focus on just one or two of the important aspects of our life, often to the detriment of the others. It is wonderful to fly up the corporate ladder and create personal wealth, but what if you have left your family and perhaps even your health behind? What does it take to have a single-digit handicap at golf or run a sub-3-hour marathon? For some it may come naturally, but for others, is it worth the price?
2020 was supposed to be the year that everyone was looking forward to. Instead, the whole world was shattered as Covid-19 spread, leaving devastation, bereavement, isolation, loss of income, fear, and uncertainty in its wake.
There are many lessons that the Covid-19 pandemic has taught us and many questions we have been forced to ask ourselves, such as:
This is a time where every person has had to become more aware of their lifestyle and needs. How many of us really know if we have any underlying health conditions? How often do we go for regular check-ups? Older people and those with medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer have developed serious illness or died. People who thought their health was good, who believed they were fit, have also been seriously affected by this virus, because they were not aware that they had these other underlying symptoms.
Many people have lost their jobs, businesses, partners, loved ones. Employees who believed they were valued highly in their positions, have been laid off or retrenched as their company has faced serious loss of revenue due to the pandemic. Many have had to use their retirement money and savings to survive over this time. Now they need to start again.
Couples and families have been forced to live in isolation every day and had more time together than they have in years. Some parents who are now working from home, have also had to assist with online education for their children. This has meant new shared duties in the running of the household. Some families and couples have drawn closer. Others have come to realise their relationship does not exist and fallen apart.
